Harnessing domain-specific knowledge for social good

Samia Khan

Samia is a recipient of the Quantedge – Cambridge Refugee Masters Scholarship in 2023.

Samia is pursuing an MPhil (Research) in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Cambridge, and aspires to pursue a PhD and forge a meaningful career in the UK Civil Service.

Tell us more about yourself and your life in the UK.

My family and I moved to the UK in 2004. Like most immigrants, we faced financial challenges. Despite initial hurdles like having to forgo some college offers as we could not afford the tuition fees and taking on odd jobs to make ends meet, I pursued part-time classes in philosophy at Kellogg College, Oxford. The professors of these classes inspired my bachelor’s degree in classical studies at the University of London. Now, I’m embarking on  my MPhil journey at Cambridge.

My first week at King’s College, Cambridge was made more memorable by taking a photo in front of the college.

How are you settling into Cambridge, and what has been most memorable/interesting/unexpected so far?

I made many friends at King’s College, Cambridge and Dr Adewunmi (Tesla) is one of them.
My Cambridge journey began with an enlightening annual symposium by the Department for Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, where I engaged with esteemed scholars such as Sir James Mallinson, the ninth Boden Professor of Sanskrit.

Despite a road accident that left me on crutches, the support of friends (Mattia from Italy, Sonji from Germany, Bere from France, Jojo from England, Adewunmi from Nigeria, postgraduate representative Yakub, and many others) who took turns delivering food and books to me regularly until I was able to walk again, highlighted the value of love and friendships.

Why did you choose to study an MPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies? What are your research interests?

After completing a taught Master's in Buddhist Meditation with a Minor in Yogic philosophy at the SOAS University of London, I delved deeper into the philosophy, literature, and culture of ancient Asia. Currently, at Cambridge, my research focuses on the 7th Century Indian literature, exploring ‘the perception of Knowledge’.

What are your plans post-graduation?

It would be a great privilege to pursue a PhD, leveraging my expertise in South Asian studies to address issues such as immigration and refugee crisis in the Civil Service. Drawing from  my experience in government projects, I believe that a nuanced understanding of the broader socio-political and historical contexts is crucial for effective solutions.

What advice do you have for other fellow refugees / young people from disadvantaged backgrounds?

A former classmate’s advice “Do your best and leave the rest” reminds me that while it is good to plan and be prepared, it is also important to stay flexible and resilient when things do not go as planned. Also, as my mentor wisely shared about turning obstacles into opportunities, success hinges on three Ps — Patience, Passion and Perseverance.
