Raffles Scholarship Series
Raffles Institution (RI) and Raffles Girls' School (RGS) are two of the most well-established secondary schools in Singapore, with a time-honoured tradition of welcoming talented students from a wide range of backgrounds.
To keep RI and RGS open and welcoming to all deserving students, regardless of circumstance, we partnered with both schools to design the Raffles Scholarship Series, an initiative to help aspiring students from disadvantaged backgrounds enrol in RI and RGS and access the exposure and developmental opportunities offered through a Rafflesian education.
In the longer term, we hope that this initiative will help RI and RGS remain inclusive and socially diverse institutions, with a vibrant learning environment for outstanding youths from all walks of life.
Quantedge Foundation co-funds the Raffles Scholarship Series to increase the socio-economic diversity of the student population in RI and RGS, and support students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Complementing the Ministry of Education’s Independent School Bursary, the Raffles Scholarship Series is an integrated needs-based merit scholarship programme awarded at Primary 5, right up to Year 6.
We have worked closely with RI and RGS to design, co-fund and monitor the effectiveness of the Raffles Scholarship Series since its inception in 2015. Under this initiative,
The initiative seeks to ensure that students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds do not forgo an opportunity to pursue a Rafflesian education due to financial considerations or concerns of not fitting in. Once enrolled, it also supports them in fully participating in the wide range of school activities alongside their peers.
We have worked closely with RI and RGS to design, co-fund and monitor the effectiveness of the Raffles Scholarship Series since its inception in 2015. Under this initiative,
- Primary 5 and 6 students from lower-income households who have done well in their studies may receive a scholarship award of $1,000, as well as mentoring by RI or RGS students who serve as their role models.
- All RI and RGS students from Year 1 to Year 4, and RI students in Year 5 and 6, who have demonstrated financial need (i.e. with gross monthly household income of $4,000 and below) receive an additional scholarship award of up to $2,000, in addition to the school fee support and UPLIFT scholarship they receive from the Ministry of Education. This enables them to participate fully in the whole range of developmental programmes, co-curricular activities and exposure trips at RI and RGS, together with their schoolmates.

Outcomes:
Since 2015, the Raffles Scholarship Series has supported more than 3,500 students.
We are also heartened that since 2019, the Ministry of Education has introduced a similar but expanded scheme, the UPLIFT Scholarship, to help outstanding students from lower-income families pursue their dreams in any independent school in Singapore.
