Bridging the Fortification Gap in the Philippines
Globally, more than two billion people, including women and children, lack essential micronutrients vital for their health and well-being. These invisible micronutrient deficiencies hold them back, impacting their health, development, and even economic potential. To address these deficiencies at scale, food fortification - the process of adding essential micronutrients to staple foods such as flour and rice - has emerged as an impactful and cost-effective intervention to improve access to key micronutrients at population scale.
Quantedge Advancement Initiative is supporting Nutrition International’s ‘Bridging the Fortification Gap in the Philippines’ project. This two-year initiative aims to improve the dietary quality and micronutrient status of the population, especially among vulnerable groups like children under five, adolescent girls and pregnant women, where micronutrient deficiencies are prevalent.

Nutritional International will be undertaking efforts to create an enabling environment for improved food fortification in the Philippines through:
- Strengthening Policies: Support the government to align, implement and enforce food fortification standards with international guidelines and best practice.
- Building Commitment: Strengthen the commitment of the government and key stakeholders to prioritise and invest in large-scale food fortification programmes.
- Capacity Building: Provide technical assistance and training to build the capacities of the government and key stakeholders to ensure the smooth implementation of food fortification programmes.
Food fortification holds immense potential to effectively address micronutrient deficiencies at scale and mitigate their associated adverse consequences. Studies have shown clear, life-changing benefits, which include:
We hope that our support for the project will catalyse large-scale impact by reducing malnutrition at scale, transform the lives of millions, and contribute to the long-term improvement of the nutrition landscape in the Philippines.
