Sun-in-a-Box
Sun-in-a-Box aims to provide energy access to off-grid communities, to alleviate energy poverty and improve their access to clean energy. Sun-in-a-Box was developed through a joint partnership between Quantedge Advancement Initiative and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) as an interdisciplinary capstone project undertaken by a team of senior year students.
To tackle urgent energy access needs of bottom-of-pyramid communities in Southeast Asia, students prototyped an off-grid, modular and scalable solar charging station to power rechargeable and portable battery packs, fitted with a smart battery management system to optimise charging and storage efficiency. This system was designed to minimise implementation cost while retaining high reliability, and took reference from real-world weather conditions in Cambodia.
We are now developing plans to pilot the prototype of Sun-in-a-Box through potential partnerships with non-profit organisations active in the energy access and community-building space.
By providing a clean and reliable supply of energy to the most vulnerable communities, we aim to target multiple co-benefits including improved educational, health, and socio-economic outcomes. Sun-in-a-Box supports our mission of transforming lives and empowering communities in Southeast Asia and beyond, through clean energy access as a key lever of social change.
