IDHealth: Meeting the healthcare needs of PWIDs through holistic and integrated care

Quantedge Foundation supported Dr Chen and IDHealth to better understand the intersections between intellectual disability and social mobility in Singapore.

Dr Chen Shiling first met Persons with Intellectual Disability (PWIDs) when she volunteered with MINDS as a teenager. The profound experiences of working with them and their families inspired her to continue volunteering as a medical student and to organise health screenings for PWIDs when she became a doctor.

These experiences informed Dr Chen’s understanding of the health challenges faced by PWIDs and the lack of access to healthcare services tailored to their specific needs. Hoping to advocate for them, Dr Chen established the Happee Hearts Movement in 2014. One of its initiatives is IDHealth – a community-based, integrated health team that serves adults with intellectual disability and their caregivers.

Through the PIR programme, we hope to strengthen IDHealth’s organisational capacity to ensure that such comprehensive and specialised care for PWIDs remains accessible. We also aim to help IDHealth develop its funding sources for long-term sustainability and scalability, which potentially includes public healthcare subsidies.

As a PIR, I’ve found myself surrounded by a team at the Foundation that cares about the cause as much as they care for the people working for it. And because they genuinely care, they challenge the status quo and ask thought-provoking questions, whilst ensuring that we are supported every step of the way. The result is a sense of community, and very importantly, the assurance that one is not alone.
