Adaptive Learning System to Enhance Community Academic Support

Leveraging adaptive learning technology to provide tailored academic support for disadvantaged students in community-based settings

Children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds may face disparities in academic outcomes due to unequal access to learning resources and support. This can impact a student’s confidence, foundational learning experiences and life opportunities.

To address this, we have developed an innovative programme that leverages adaptive learning technology to provide tailored academic support in community-based settings. Inspired by the "Teaching at the Right Level" (TaRL) methodology, this approach ensures that each student receives personalised learning support, allowing them to progress at a pace according to their respective readiness. 

In partnership with Temasek Foundation, Quantedge Foundation is piloting this exciting initiative with partners from Yayasan MENDAKI, SINDA, CampusImpact, SHINE Children and Youth Services, and South West CDC. 

An Adaptive Learning System (ALS) will deliver school curriculum-aligned academic content through quizzes and interactive learning activities customised to each student’s readiness level. With guidance from tutors and volunteers in the community, this approach aims to make learners more engaged and motivated.

This 2-year initiative will support approximately 1,500 Primary 4 to 6 students, with the Singapore University of Social Sciences conducting an evaluation of its impact. We will also collaborate with Engineering Good to donate refurbished laptops to some of our programme partners.

This initiative seeks to determine whether an ALS approach can enhance the effectiveness of community academic support programmes by personalising each student’s learning journey and adjusting content difficulty to match the student’s individual learning pace. In addition, we aim to explore how community-based organisations can effectively leverage educational technology to support their students. By identifying best practices, we hope to encourage wider adoption of successful strategies across the broader community academic support ecosystem.

Ultimately, insights from this pilot will inform future initiatives, with the potential for wider implementation based on evaluation findings. It reflects Quantedge Foundation’s commitment to ensuring that all students have access to quality educational opportunities regardless of their background.
