Mohamed Fayyaz
Political Science for a greater purpose
Fayyaz is a recipient of the Quantedge – Lee Kuan Yew Masters Scholarship in 2023.
He is driven by a passion for global security and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the world. Currently pursuing a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Politics and International Studies at Cambridge, he seeks to tackle pressing global security issues and make a valuable contribution to global stability.
Tell us more about yourself.
I am an adventure junkie drawn to the great outdoors. Whether it is biking through the untamed forests of Singapore and Malaysia or paragliding for the ultimate adrenaline rush, I find solace and excitement in nature.
Volunteering with community projects also brings me a deep sense of fulfilment, as it is my way of giving back to society and making a tangible difference to those in need.
How are you settling into Cambridge, and what has been most memorable so far?
Adapting to Cambridge has been a fascinating experience. The academic culture here is very different from what I was accustomed to in Singapore. My professors and coursemates tend to approach problems in a philosophical and deeply analytical manner, which is both challenging and enlightening for me.

I have also met many brilliant minds at Cambridge who inspire me with their innovative ideas. My peers come from all around the world, offering diverse viewpoints on various issues. This global diversity undeniably distinguishes the Cambridge experience, and I have found it profoundly enriching.
Why did you choose to pursue an MPhil in Politics and International Studies at Cambridge?
Driven by a deep passion for politics and global affairs, I saw studying overseas as a transformative opportunity that would expose me to new experiences, diverse cultures and perspectives. Cambridge’s rich academic approach and multidisciplinary approach appealed to me.
For my dissertation, my research focuses on the intersection of Islam and politics in Malaysia. This topic has intrigued me since my undergraduate years when I was inspired by friends who shared their experiences with intra-Islamic diversity in Singapore. This is an area often overlooked in academic literature and my research aims to fill gaps in existing literature.
I saw studying overseas as a transformative opportunity that would expose me to new experiences, diverse cultures and perspectives.
What are your career aspirations post-graduation and why?
​In the near term, I aim to return to the consulting sector, focusing on business and risk consulting. In the long term, I aspire to work with international organisations dedicated to tackling global security challenges. These challenges, spanning international conflicts and geopolitical instability, are critical issues requiring concerted global efforts.
What energises you? What do you find meaningful?
​As a Normal (Academic) student, I faced scepticism and was teased by my peers for aspiring to study at the National University of Singapore (NUS). In moments of doubt, the image of my entire class laughing at me fuels my determination to succeed. My journey has shown me that with perseverance, resilience, and unwavering commitment, even the loftiest ambitions can become reality.

​I thrive on social interaction and value connecting with people from diverse backgrounds. A single connection has the power to profoundly shift one’s perspectives. I once met a student from South Sudan whose story of escaping a war zone and navigating the instability in Africa was eye-opening and invaluable to me, especially as a Singaporean with limited exposure to refugees.
​Apart from broadening one’s horizons, interacting widely can also open up career opportunities. It was during my university years that I first recognised the power of networking, particularly through various career fairs.
My journey has shown me that with perseverance, resilience, and unwavering commitment, even the loftiest ambitions can become reality.
What advice would you give to your younger self or others from similar backgrounds?
​Believe in your limitless potential. The world offers boundless opportunities when you set goals and stay determined in the face of challenges. Embrace adversity, for therein lie the sweetest rewards.
