Redefining Scholarship for a More Inclusive Future

Aaron Huq

Aaron is a recipient of the Quantedge – Cambridge Refugee Scholarship in 2024.
Driven by a belief in the transformative power of empathy and action, Aaron combines academic research with activism to foster more inclusive societies. From grappling with self-doubt to embracing confidence, Aaron is now pursuing an MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies at the University of Cambridge – an opportunity they once thought was beyond reach.

What sparked your passion for South Asian history and your focus on indigenous groups? What are your academic and career goals?

Growing up in Bengali-dominant Bangladesh, I was deeply influenced by my nanny, Sunitra, who hails from the Garo indigenous group. Seeing how my family treated her differently due to her class and Garo identity opened my eyes to the discrimination faced by indigenous communities. Inspired by my friendship with Sunitra, I dedicated my undergraduate thesis to exploring Garo history.

As a historian, I aim to challenge the dominant narratives of indigeneity in both Western and South Asian contexts. In South Asia, "indigeneity" often carries colonial-era connotations of primitiveness, yet indigenous communities are reshaping this identity. My research seeks to amplify these voices, and offer nuanced perspectives on South Asia’s diverse histories.

How has your experience at the University of Cambridge been so far?

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how quickly I found a sense of belonging here. The diverse communities within the university and the local area have made me feel welcome, despite it being my first time in the UK. I’ve been fortunate to make great friends early on, and I deeply appreciate the support of my department. While adjusting to the 4 p.m. darkness has been challenging, every other aspect of life in Cambridge has been incredibly enjoyable.

Tell us more about your passion for activism.

My experiences have deepened my empathy for people from diverse backgrounds and inspired me to work with various minority groups. Despite our differences—whether racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, or gender-based—the exclusion and “othering” we face often share common threads. Activism enables me to turn scholarly insights into meaningful action for change.

What are some of the most meaningful lessons or inspirations from your journey?

When pursuing undergraduate studies abroad seemed unattainable, my determination to build a better future kept me going. I once thought determination was my only strength, but my undergraduate advisor, Dr. Christina Welsch, helped uncover my true potential. Her unwavering encouragement gave me the confidence to aim higher, inspiring me to apply to Cambridge. To anyone facing self-doubt, remember: let those moments pass. With determination, you will always find a way forward.
